Pros / It costs less than $20.

Cons / The design feels flimsy and cheap.

Verdict / The Big Red Rooster is a cost-effective option to test if you like sleeping with a sound machine, but don’t expect it to last forever.

The Big Red Rooster sound machine is compact and works with batteries, which are important features for traveling with a sound machine. Unfortunately, the buttons and overall design feels cheap and flimsy, which are not desirable features for tossing this sleep machine in a carry-on bag. The unit we bought from Amazon had a defective power supply that made the sound machine turn off randomly during testing. The power supply issue is not a surprise when you consider the $20 price tag, and could be an isolated incident, but it was very distracting

There are six sound profiles on this sleep machine, including one white noise sound and five nature sounds. During testing, we didn’t notice any distracting loops with the Big Red Rooster, but the nature sounds were not the most accurate we heard. The summer night sound profile has some insect noises that are high-pitched and could easily startle you if the volume is set too high.

The Big Red Rooster is a good option for traveling with your sound machine. It can run on 3 AA batteries and is small enough to stow away in a small carry-on bag. The battery backup could also be a saving grace if you run into the same power supply issue we encountered during testing. Although this sound machine isn’t durable, its low price lets you feel less guilty about tossing it in a drawer in your RV or cramming it in an overhead bin on your flight because it is easily replaceable.

One annoying design feature we came across during testing is the lack of a memory function. Most sound machines we tested, including the Avantek, remember the last volume setting and sound profile you used. The Big Red Rooster saved the sound profile, but every time we turned the machine off and back on again, the volume was set to an ear-splitting volume. This sound machine uses volume buttons instead of a knob, and you can’t hold the buttons down to adjust the volume, you have to press them repeatedly to turn it down. That could result in a broken button, especially if you press it repeatedly every day.

The Big Red Rooster is less than $20 and has all the important sound profiles. The sound quality isn’t as good as the best sound machines we tested, but we couldn’t hear any noticeable loops. Durability is our primary concern with this product, but the low cost might offset that concern if you use it sparingly, or use it primarily as a sound machine to travel with.
