The Aroma Professional 5-Quart Food Steamer is a single-tiered high-wattage appliance. It features a wide base and large water reservoir that quickly heats up and starts steaming almost immediately. Food cooked in the Aroma Professional is good, and the steamer can keep your food warm until you get to it.
We tested fish, chicken, vegetables and rice. We found the chicken cooked in the Aroma Professional to be among the best. The fish, vegetables and rice were all good. Strangely, Aroma doesn’t include a rice bowl. We cooked rice in this steamer using our own bowl, which garnered average scores among our taste testers. If you plan to use this food steamer to cook rice, the lack of a bowl, coupled with average results, may mean this isn’t the right steamer for you.
The Aroma Pro was the only electric food steamer we tested with just one tier. If you’re cooking multiple foods, such as fish and vegetables, it may be difficult to fit more than single portions on the single tray. Further, it's difficult to keep the flavors distinct and separate when foods are so closely crowded together.
The water reservoir, which holds 80 ounces, is the largest reservoir among the food steamers we tested. You can easily check the water level as the Aroma has an outside water-level window. If you ever need to refill the water, you’ll need to unstack the steaming tray from the base. However, because this steamer has a substantial water capacity, it’s unlikely that you’ll run out of water if you fill the tray to capacity before starting. The 1,000-watt base easily heated the water and immediately started steaming our food.
Despite the large water capacity and high wattage, there were some drawbacks with this unit. During our tests, we measured the exterior temperature, which registered 211 degrees Fahrenheit, the hottest among the units we tested. The steaming tray is dishwasher safe, and the steaming base wipes down easily with a damp cloth, but the Aroma Professional was one of the more difficult trays to wash by hand. It also didn’t include a delayed start feature, but there is a warming setting to keep your food the right temperature and a recipe book to help you get started.
You can find email, phone and live-chat support on Aroma’s website. Aroma has a FAQs section for handling common issues. We called and emailed Aroma and both times the company responded quickly to our questions. Another nice feature found on the website is a hosted forum for exchanging cooking tips, recipes and troubleshooting. You can find the product manual online, and you can register your steamer and order replacement parts online as well.
The Aroma Professional 5-Quart Food Steamer has plenty of cooking power and a large water reservoir, so you can steam foods for long periods of time without needing to refill the water tray. The single layer may make it difficult to keep food separate, and rice cooking is a weakness. If you’re looking for a steamer that can cook very dense food for long periods of time, the Aroma Pro may be the best steamer for you.
