This is not the most impressive machine for water efficiency of the ones we compared. It is above average for annual water cost, water used per wash and annual water usage – all things tallied by the EPA to help indicate overall efficiency. However, it is Energy Star-certified so even if it is less efficient among this group of washers it does provide a decent value when measured against EPA standards for this type of machine. The matching dryer, MED3500FW, also has an Energy Star, so you know it will use about 20 percent less energy than conventional models.

This is a product that makes a fair amount of economic sense. It is below average for estimated yearly operation costs and initial price, so that makes this a relatively budget-friendly option. Another fact that inspires confidence in purchasing this product is the long warranty. You can assume that initial investment will be paid back to you over years of use. You get 10 years of coverage on both the tub and the motor. There was only one machine that had stronger warranties.

Most of the machines we compared had more variety in cycles than this one. Even though this machine only boasts eight cycles, that's probably still more than you had if you are replacing an older machine. The allergen cycle is NSF-certified, so that offers peace of mind for those with allergies. There is a delayed start option that can prompt the cycle to begin up to 12 hours after you set it up so laundry comes out when it is convenient for you. The Fresh Hold option also helps with laundry timing – it can tumble loads periodically for up to 12 hours so they do not get mildew if you can't remove them right away. There is also a rapid wash when you need to save time. If you were hoping for a machine with even more wash cycle selection, consider the Kenmore 41072.

There are more efficient machines out there and those with a little more variety in wash cycles, but the Maytag MHW3505FW still offers a good value, especially when you consider its low initial price and ongoing operation costs. This machine also has great warranty coverage that ensures it will be in use for a very long time.
