Home computers are very technically similar these days. In order to stand out, manufacturers will sometimes go for an aesthetic appeal, which could be anything from an attractive case design to convenient port placement. In the case of the Gateway SX2865 home computer, you'll be treated to an extremely compact machine that doesn't suffer at all from its lack of size.
As you decide on the right home computer for you and your family, you'll want to make sure the one you select can run all of your applications smoothly, which requires a powerful processor alongside memory and storage space. Random Access Memory, or RAM, allows you to run multiple applications simultaneously. The Gateway SX2865 has 4GB of memory and the capacity for 8GB. 4GB is plenty to run day-to-day programs, and 8GB will satisfy virtually any need apart from heavily intensive video rendering or 3D design. The storage capacity is 1TB – enough to store about 1,000 hours of digital video. The processor is an Intel Pentium G640 with a speed of 2.8 GHz, which is decent but could be better.
The features included with the Gateway SX2865 desktop computer are comprehensive. We like the fact that it comes with Windows 8; it's always a bonus when you don't have to pay extra for the operating system. This home computer also comes with wireless already enabled, and while the six USB ports are great, we wanted more when it comes to the optical drive. The DVD player/writer is useful, but since Blu-rays are now taking control of the media business, we would have preferred it to have a Blu-ray player.
As we mentioned, what sets the Gateway SX2865 apart from other home computers is its small size. It measures in at 12.4 x 3.9 x 10.4 inches. This is roughly half the width and half a foot shorter than the other products we reviewed. This is the perfect computer if you don't have a lot of space available.
The support for the Gateway SX2865 is where this home computer is lacking most. It is vital for you to be able to contact the manufacturer if you have any questions or concerns regarding your computer. The support offered by Gateway is limited to an email address and phone support. The problem is that the phone support costs extra if you need to call the company.
Is the Gateway SX2865 home computer the one for you? If you have a limited amount of space but still want a machine with a large storage capacity and plenty of RAM, then yes, this computer is worth a closer look. However, slower CPU speed or the lack of a Blu-ray player may be a deal breaker.
