Pros / Flir FX has the best overall video quality among the security cameras we tested.

Cons / The camera's mobile app takes some getting used to.

Verdict / Flir FX is unmatched in terms of video quality and clarity, especially in bright daylight environments, though its setup process has a few quirks.

The Flir FX has a few tricks up its sleeve, especially its RapidRecap, which condenses several hours' worth of footage into a short summary clip. In our video quality tests, it had the highest overall score. This impressive video quality helps the Flir FX outperform other top security cameras.

Video & Audio

While no security camera perfectly captures video in both low-light and bright daylight environments, the Flir FX came closer than any other camera we tested. The camera showed no preference for close or distant details, instead providing a clear picture of everything in the room.

In dimmer, ambient daylight, the Flir FX loses a little clarity, but still produces excellent video. In nighttime video tests, the Flir FX didn't quite match the quality of the top-performing nighttime security camera, the Belkin NetCam HD+, but it was a close second. Video clarity in the dark was better close to the camera, but it diminished with objects more than 10 feet away.

The Flir FX's 1080p video resolution is another factor in the home security camera's sharp images. It has a 160-degree field of view, the second widest in our review, which allows it to observe more of the room than the average security camera.

Convenience & Operation

To set up the Flir FX requires a little patience, as the camera doesn't work until its battery charges for at least 30 minutes. The two batteries, one in the camera and one in its base, add a useful battery backup of up to four hours, a feature no other security camera in our review has.

During our tests, the mobile app presented a small problem. While other security cameras show video when you open the various apps, we had to look through the Flir app menu options to find video, which isn't as effective. The Flir app has sound and motion detection alerts that you can customize to suit your preferences, but it doesn't allow you to schedule recording or integrate it with your smart home.

RapidRecap is the most unique thing about the Flir FX. This feature looks over the last few hours of recordings and superimposes all of the activity into a short summary video. Each moving thing in the recap has a timestamp that shows when it was in front of the camera. The recaps can be hectic if there is a lot of activity but are an easy way to review multiple hours' worth of video in a few minutes.

The Flir FX is one of two Wi-Fi security cameras in our review with both local and cloud storage options. Flir offers one free and one paid cloud storage plan. With local storage, you can use a microSD card up 64GB.

Help & Support

Flir FX has a one-year warranty, which is average for wireless security cameras. Customer support is available through email, telephone and live chat on the Flir website. You can also find FAQs and tutorials for answers to common questions.

Flir FX has the best video quality among the 10 security cameras we tested. It records clear video that shows detail both near to and far from the camera. The field of view offers wide coverage in most rooms. While the app has a few quirks, it works well enough. The RapidRecap and battery backup features on this camera help make it one of the best security cameras.
