The Bosch Compact Mixer is a lightweight, primarily plastic mixer that surprised us by handling the tough job of kneading bread dough quite well. However, it did poorly with other kitchen tests, and we needed to rely heavily on the user manual to get the right buttons and knobs to work correctly since the design is not especially intuitive.

As part of the tests we put this Bosch electric mixer through in our lab kitchen, we used the dough hook to knead bread dough for two loaves of bread for 10 minutes, and the dough came out nearly perfect. However, this lightweight mixer tap-danced a bit on the counter, and we had to babysit it during its kneading process. Nonetheless, the resulting dough was just as smooth and elastic as the best stand mixers of all those we reviewed.

We then conducted a cookie dough test, making a basic dough mix and adding chocolate chips at the end. The Bosch’s paddle did not mix the chocolate chip cookie dough nearly as well as the dough hook performed with bread dough, and we ended up having to finish the mixing process with a wooden spoon to get all the ingredients thoroughly blended together.

In a third test, we attempted to whip 4 ounces of room-temperature egg whites to stiff peaks, but the Bosch didn’t succeed in creating more than a frothy liquid in the four-minute time frame we set. If you need to whip cream or egg whites often, or if you make various dough recipes, the KitchenAid Classic Plus costs somewhat more but will do all those things nicely.

You don’t get many extras with this Bosch compact mixer, but it includes an excellent splashguard that covers the entire bowl opening. All the removable parts are dishwasher safe, and all the other parts are easy to clean – bread dough doesn’t immediately stick to plastic. The attachments you get are standard – a dough hook, paddle and whisk – but the paddle attachment is made with wire whisks that are much weaker than a solid piece. The Bosch gives you optional attachments sold separately that can turn your dough mixer into an ice cream maker, food processor, food mill, juicer and more.

Bosch offers a warranty of only one year, and during that time your mixer is protected from defective parts. If you run into trouble or have questions, you can get support from the manufacturer via the website, where you can find FAQs, parts and accessories, an online user manual and a phone number for customer assistance.

While the Bosch Compact Tilt-Head Stand Mixer exceeded our expectations with our bread dough recipe, it failed to perform well with the paddle or whisk attachment. It has a moderately powerful motor for such a small appliance, and it offers versatility with the plethora of extra attachments you can buy separately, but we recommend looking to a more powerful machine like the KitchenAid Classic Plus if you need a mixer on a regular basis.
