VERDICT / There's nothing Emsisoft offers or does that all the other products on our side-by-side comparison chart don't do better.
Editor’s Note: Top Ten Reviews uses test results from the independent laboratory AV-Test as part of our review process for the best antispyware software. AV-Test looks specifically at protection, performance and usability on multiple versions of Windows operating systems, and it performs these evaluations several times throughout the year. We use the most current AV-Test scores available at the time of our review. It is possible that new AV-Test scores will be released after our review goes live on the site. We will consider these scores during our next review of the best antispyware software.
Emsisoft Anti-Malware ranked dead last in our review of antispyware software. It simply does not provide the protection and performance of the best spyware removal programs. It's also missing some critical features, such as the ability to scan incoming emails and create rescue discs in the case of a catastrophic infection.
AV-Test is an independent and impartial organization that tests the most popular antispyware on the market today. It put Emsisoft Anti-Malware up against more than 14,000 pieces of spyware and other threats to your computer. This spyware removal program scored 86 percent on this test. Given the amount of damage spyware can do to your computer and the risk of identity theft, this score is simply unacceptable. The products that ranked highest in our review all scored 100 percent in this test.
Emsisoft Anti-Malware fared even worse in AV-Test's performance test – which measures how well antispyware software uses your computer's resources. It scored 58 percent, the lowest in our review. This means that this spyware removal program hogs processing power and significantly slows down the other things you're doing. Browsing, downloading, uploading, gaming and more all experience major lag while this program is running.
The final AV-Test score we look at in our review of the best antispyware software is for usability. This test keeps track of how many false positives, or legitimate programs misread as threats, each malware removal program yielded. Emsisoft Anti-Malware scored a respectable 92 percent in this test. The average score among the products we reviewed was 97 percent. So you may encounter some false positives, but it will be rare.
The software itself is extremely easy to use. You can initiate, schedule and create custom scans all in seconds, and anyone with even minimal computer skills can operate it. It has most of the core features we look for in this category, such as the ability to detect and remove not just spyware, but also common viruses, keyloggers, ransomware and the Trojan horses that deliver them. However, the higher-ranking programs on our lineup can do these things more effectively.
It's missing some tools we look for in the best spyware removal software. Chief among them is the ability to scan incoming email for spyware. Email is one of the main ways hackers infect your system, so this omission is a major one. It also lacks the ability to create a rescue boot disc – which could revive your computer in the case of a devastating spyware infection.
Emsisoft Anti-Malware is easy learn and use. It also has the core spyware removal tools we look for, but it's missing tools like email scanning and rescue disc creation. Additionally, its poor performance in AV-Test's evaluations make it much less attractive antispyware software than the higher-ranking products in our review.
