AVG Technologies began in 1991 and is now one of the biggest players in the antivirus software market with corporate offices in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. The virus protection software recognizes threats by matching them to a database of known threats. It also defends against spyware and adware in order to protect personal information.
One of the most respected IT-security institutes, AV-Test, tested AVG AntiVirus and scored it for its ability to protect and repair. AV-Test also tested AVG for usability. While AVG was excellent at detecting malware, it was relatively slow at performing scans and average at distinguishing between legitimate software and malware during a system scan.
AVG prevents you from opening infected files by placing them in quarantine. The software collects data on new infections across its user base to share with other customers' PCs, but you can opt out of this function if you like. When infections occur, an alert pops up an Auto-Fix button. If you press it, AVG corrects the problem without further input.
This virus control software waits until your computer idles before it scans to reduce unnecessary intrusions. It is intelligent enough to ignore files that it has already scanned. It has a game mode, so you can concentrate without enduring updates and scans. For times when an infection stops your computer from working properly, you can create a bootable rescue disk.
You can contact AVG when you have problems with the software. In-program help is available with a user manual and links to additional resources online. The online support center has a FAQs section and a knowledgebase. AVG offers email support and live chat if you have a specific question. 24-hour telephone support and professional assistance is available to help with virus removal if you pay for premium support.
AVG AntiVirus is a good performer with convenient features. It maintains a database of known threats to block, and it uses cloud technology to quickly deploy defenses against zero-day threats almost as soon as hackers hatch them. It understands how to protect you and warns you against internet attacks. Support is very good, and AVG goes the extra mile by providing live chat.
