Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because AV-Test, an independent antivirus test lab, did not evaluate TrustPort Antivirus in its latest round of tests. These tests play a heavy role in our ratings, so we are unable to review products not included in the tests. The original review is below, but check out our current Antivirus Software comparison here.
TrustPort Antivirus is in our review of best antivirus software because it put in a good showing during stress testing at Virus Bulletin in 2014, which earned it another VB100 award. Its dual antivirus engines licensed from AVG and Bitdefender worked in tandem to detect and prevent 100 percent of the test malware samples exposed to TrustPort Antivirus running on Windows 7, 32-bit edition. (Unfortunately, TrustPort Antivirus did not participate in recent tests at the AV Test lab, the tests that largely inform the product rankings in our review of best antivirus software.)
The protection is proactive in the sense that every time you launch an application or open a file, TrustPort checks it. If malware sneaks in and establishes itself without detection, TrustPort can discover it and block it the moment it wakes up and tries to run or communicate with its sender. Because of hacker ingenuity, system and application vulnerabilities, and human gullibility, there is no such thing as perfect virus protection. At some point a malware invasion may render your PC inoperable. That’s why TrustPort Antivirus and most of its competitors include a system rescue disk feature that allows you to reboot your compromised PC and purge it from infections.
Another feature common to most PC antivirus software and included with TrustPort Antivirus is a silent gamer mode that allows you to watch video, listen to music or play computer games without pop-up alerts from the antivirus software. Protection continues; it’s just that you don’t receive interrupting messages about program updates or how TrustPort automatically took care of a threat. One TrustPort feature not included with quite a few of its competitors is an application inspector that is always running in the background, monitoring suspicious activities in the file system and registry. The application inspector protects the operating system from potential damage that various unknown toolbars and screensavers can inflict.
The manual that is available online is one of the finest we have ever encountered. Access to technical support is free, and you can email for support.
TrustPort Antivirus contains two antivirus engines outsourced from excellent security technology providers, which makes it so efficient at malware detection that it repeatedly wins VB100 awards from the Virus Bulletin test lab. It comes with a superb user manual. Technical support hours coincide with the Central Eastern Europe time zone. However, since access to support is via email, time-zone differences do not seem as though they would be much of a hindrance.
