Editor’s Note: Top Ten Reviews uses test results from the independent laboratory AV-Test as part of our review process for the best internet security suites software. AV-Test looks specifically at protection, performance and usability on multiple versions of Windows operating systems, and it performs these evaluations several times throughout the year. We use the most current AV-Test scores available at the time of our review. It is possible that new AV-Test scores will be released after our review goes live on the site. We will consider these scores during our next review of the best internet security suites software.

We include G Data Internet Security for Windows in our reviews of the best internet security software because of its strong showing in a test by the AV-Test software lab and its broad feature list that goes beyond basic internet protections. However, it slows your computer down while it runs more than other security suites.

AV-Test installed and tested 22 internet security software brands continuously during March and April 2016. G Data received the standard scores for identifying and blocking malware, though it had more difficulty detecting new threats. It blocked known threats 100 percent of the time.

One important test AV-Test conducted is the performance evaluation. This measured how much slower your computer will run with the internet security suite installed on your system. G Data received a 4.5 out of 6, which is lower than the industry average. It slowed standard PCs significantly more than usual while testers accessed websites, installed programs and used popular applications. There wasn't as much slowdown while testers copied files. The lag may not be too bad when you are using your computer for simple tasks, but this slowing of your system may interfere with viewing movies online or playing games.

Despite the slowdown, G Data has a healthy feature set for an internet protection suite. Its abilities include detecting viruses, scanning your email for threats, and ensuring secure online shopping and banking. It also includes a proprietary firewall that bridges any gaps in the standard Microsoft firewall that comes with your Windows operating system.

Another level of protection in this internet security suite is antispam tools, applications that block advertising emails and protect you against phishing links that try to trick you into revealing personal identity data. Parental controls are a special feature that G Data includes to keep your child away from websites that you decide are not appropriate. You can also use them to control how much time your child spends web surfing and gaming.

G Data Premium Security Suite

G Data Total Internet Security for Windows is G Data's premier security software. In addition to the antivirus protection and security tools found in lower-tier solutions, Total Internet Security includes more features to protect your online identity in addition to securing your computer from malware threats. Two important inclusions are a file shredder and a password manager.

The file shredder is a function that completely eliminates any found malware from your computer rather than just isolating it as many other premium security suites do. This gives your system extra protection from these threats and eliminates the possibility of the threat getting loose in the future.

A password manager is a place to keep your passwords to important programs, including online shopping sites, banking pages and email programs. This manager stops hackers from locating these passwords should they break into your system and attempt to steal your identity.

For any technical issues, G Data has telephone support available 24/7. You can also submit a service ticket on its website and receive an email response from the service team. We were unable to find additional resources, not even FAQs, to help you resolve your issues.

G Data is among the top 10 internet security brands because of its overall protection and features. It does score low in performance for significantly slowing down your computer system. However, it has important features, especially parental controls and 24/7 access to data support technicians, which is better than several of its competitors.
