Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because AV-Test, an independent antivirus test lab, did not evaluate F-Prot Antivirus in its latest round of tests. These tests play a heavy role in our ratings, so we are unable to review products not included in the tests. The original review is below, but check out our current Antivirus Software comparison here.

F-Prot Antivirus is antivirus software that protects against viruses, worms and Trojans. The software has passed the VirusBulletin 100% test, proving it can protect from known in-the-wild viruses. But the test also illustrated the comparative weakness of F-Prot, with the software only showing 48% accuracy for reactive and proactive scanning technology.

Installing and setting up F-Prot Antivirus is easy and will look familiar to anyone who has installed software on a Windows computer. The complete installation requires a system restart, after which F-Prot automatically checks for the most recent updates. The software is designed to run by itself (with automatic scans and updates) for the most part. F-Prot Antivirus features proactive heuristic detection to protect from previously unknown threats. The software also has password-protected settings and integrated email scanning (for both inbound and outbound messages and attachments). Unfortunately, the web-based protection is limited to the Internet Explorer browser.

One nice feature that F-Prot offers is multi-user licensing. One license of F-Prot Antivirus is good for up to five home computers. F-Prot’s antivirus software includes automatic updates that are designed to be faster and lighter (because they are delivered on a regular basis). Proxy server users can also set up for automatic updates.

F-Prot’s online support center features a knowledgebase and forum. You can submit a suspicious file to the company to look at, or send a specific question by submitting a ticket.

We can’t recommend F-Prot Antivirus, especially when there are so many better antivirus programs available. Published test results from independent software evaluation labs are not convincing. Furthermore, AV-Test labs has not published test results for F-Prot Antivirus. Nevertheless, it would be better to install F-Prot Antivirus than to try to survive on the security that comes native with Windows. One license will protect five home computers, which is a very nice aspect of this antivirus software product.
