The Stihl 271 Farm Boss is an ergonomically designed, gas powered chainsaw ideal for small farms or large grounds with mature trees, so it's not surprise that we've ranked it top of our best chainsaws guide. The Stihl 271 Farm Boss offers a highly efficient gas engine that delivers 20% longer run times between refueling – while cutting exhaust emissions in half compared to the previous version, the MS 270. A pre-separation air filtration system improves the longevity of the filter for lower maintenance.

The anti-vibration system makes this a more comfortable saw to use, with a side access chain tensioner for convenience. The 50.2 cc engine coupled with a 20” bar offers a powerful cut that can melt through larger diameter logs of 20”. While the pros would still consider this a ‘homeowner’ saw, it’s one of the most powerful on the market that doesn’t require a forestry degree to operate.

Stihl 271 Farm Boss: Price

Like a vintage Gucci handbag or Danish art glass, this is an investment piece. The price is high, but if you look after this chainsaw well, you can leave it to your children in your will. You cannot get this product online - to buy it, you will need to go to a dealer. You can find your nearest via the Stihl website. The RRP is $399.99.

If that seems a bit steep and you want a cheaper gas-powered chainsaw that's better suited to a casual user, try the Remington RM4216 Rebel.

Stihl 271 Farm Boss: Features

The 50.2cc 2-stroke engine has a patented design to cut fuel emissions by 50% compared to previous models, making it more environmentally friendly and more pleasant to use. It is also fuel efficient so you won’t be stopping to top up the tank every ten minutes.

Stihl 271 Farm Boss: specs

Type: Gas powered
Bar size:
16” or 20” bar
Weight: 12.3lbs
Emissions: Low emissions
Battery capacity/fuel tank volume: 16.9oz
Engine power: 2.6 kW

At 12.3lbs it is quite a beast, but for a large saw, that is a very manageable weight. The size won’t be for everyone though – make sure you hold it with a full tank before you decide to buy.

The low vibration technology and ergonomic design make this a comfortable saw to use, even for long periods. It can cut through large diameter pieces of wood making it perfect for the small-scale farmer or rancher with a tree management plan.

The Stihl 271 Farm Boss offers a few cool features, like a summer and winter setting for starting it up, and it is more than capable of bucking small to medium felled trees. A very durable piece of equipment worth the price tag.

It is difficult to find a negative review of this product, with most professional users loving it right off the bat. The general consensus seems to be that if you have the money to spend, you can’t go wrong with a Stihl 271 Farm Boss.

Stihl 271 Farm Boss: User reviews

The Stihl website has almost 1000 reviews, with 93% of customers stating they would recommend this chainsaw. There were about 30 negative reviews which seem to be largely written by inexperienced users. However, even 5-star reviewers have noted that having to communicate with a dealer is a frustration – especially for those who have to drive a significant distance to get to the store. It is also worth noting that these dealers often charge for repairs even if the owner claims that those repairs are covered under warranty. Bear in mind when buying that, if your Stihl dealer isn’t local, you will need to travel this same distance for servicing and replacement parts.

Should you buy the Stihl 271 Farm Boss?

If you want a powerful and impressive chainsaw that can handle all your day-to-day tasks and take on the occasional big job as well, then the Stihl 271 Farm Boss will be a great buy. This chainsaw is the epitome of the phrase, ‘buy once and buy well’. If you maintain it properly, it will be the only chainsaw you ever own.
