PROS / Private Internet Access offers great security options.
CONS / The configuration process is a bit confusing, and you may have difficulty reaching help and support.
VERDICT / You can be confident that this web proxy will hide your identity and keep your data secure.
Private Internet Access is a proxy service that lives up to its name. This web proxy does an excellent job of hiding your location and IP address. It gives you options to help keep your data secure. However, this proxy service is harder to set up than most of those we reviewed.
Signing up for Private Internet Access and downloading the proxy software is not as simple as some of the other services we reviewed. One unique feature of this service is the ability to use a gift card from a major company as payment when you sign up. This means that you do not have to have any of your personal banking or credit card information attached to the account. This feature provides a level of anonymity that is hard to match.
The user dashboard is simple but lacks some of the more useful features that we were looking for in web proxies, like interactive maps for choosing a server location. When you first log in, you simply choose the region you'd like to access servers in from a drop down menu.
One license grants you rights to use the proxy service on two electronic devices. You can also use Private Internet Access on Android and Apple devices. Unlike some of the other proxy services we reviewed, this feature is included in the price of the subscription.
When we were installing the proxy software, we found help and support to be lacking. Responses over email were slow, with long gaps between answers to questions. The knowledgebase was also difficult to navigate and did not have any pictures accompanying the step-by-step installation instructions.
In security, Private Internet Access really stands out. You can connect to a server using OpenVPN, PPTP or L2TP. OpenVPN is the best option of the three. It creates a virtual private network that is secure and stable for sharing your data. The tunnel that your data transmits through is TLS encrypted, which provides great security. Additionally, this anonymous proxy server offers both 128- and 256-bit encryption to keep your data secure. The different encryption levels work with specific connections. For instance, if you use OpenVPN, you'll have 256-bit encryption for your data.
You can browse the web anonymously with Private Internet Access and know that your data will be secure. You can even put it on your mobile devices. It may be harder to set up on your computer than other proxy services might be. However, once it's up, you shouldn't run into any problems.
