The virus protection portion of Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac earned a perfect score for identifying and blocking every Mac malware threat we used in our tests. And it did a good job blocking Windows malware, too, so you don’t accidentally send infected files to Windows computers. However, Trend Micro does have a few quirks to get used to.
During virus scans, we could easily keep working online, but we couldn’t navigate the Trend Micro dashboard. It was as though the Mac antivirus program was locked until after the scan was complete. And when removing threats from the quarantine, it wasn’t obvious that we had to click the lock icon at the bottom of the screen to first unlock the folder before we could select and delete quarantined malware. We had to do a quick Google search to figure it out.
There are some question marks throughout the Trend Micro program to help you answer questions about how the software works. If you click a question mark icon, a help document opens on the Trend Micro page. You must click through several layers of support pages to get to the FAQs. Eventually at the bottom of one of the pages is a link to support telephone numbers, email addresses and live chat. Telephone support is available during regular business hours. You can purchase a premium service package and have access to 24/7 telephone support. Email support is also available, and you’ll typically receive a response within 48 hours.
This Mac antivirus software scans incoming emails and USB drives to ensure malware isn’t introduced to your computer through these sources. It’s one of the few basic antivirus programs that include parent controls to let you block inappropriate websites. It also monitors privacy settings and provides you with activity logs of your kids’ social media activities so you know what they share and see. And you can enable the safe web feature to automatically block websites that are known to have hidden viruses, which is especially helpful if your kids like to play games online since several gaming sites harbor malware.
One of Trend Micro’s best features is its vulnerability scanner. This checks all the programs on your computer, including the operating system, to make sure you have the latest versions installed. Keeping the most up-to-date software versions on your computer eliminates weak spots ransomware and hackers can use to break in.
Some advanced tools not included with Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac are mobile protection and a password manager. It also doesn’t have a VPN or a personal firewall. However, all of these are included in Trend Micro’s higher priced security suite, Maximum Security, which is also compatible with Mac. We reviewed Trend Micro Maximum Security as part of our Computer Protection Program comparison.
While you need to purchase a more expensive program to protect your mobile devices and use a password manager, Trend Micro Antivirus for Mac includes parental controls and a vulnerability scanner to help keep your computer safe from threats beyond viruses. Trend Micro scores high for protecting against both Mac and Windows malware, plus it doesn’t use a lot of your computer’s resources while it scans for threats.
